A strategy I use to check students' understanding frequently is what i call "sentence-finishing", where very simply sometimes I'll stop a sentence before the end and let students fill in the ... blank. At the very least, it allows a teacher to check whether a student is engaged at all in the first...place. Do you have any favorites?
